Workshop Leaders & Topics

 

Gary Bowman is a singer/songwriter/musician, part-time zookeeper, and full-time educator.

During his 20 years in the field of public education, Gary has taught at the Elementary,

Secondary, and College levels. He has been a workshop leader for G.E.M.S. (Great Explorations

in Math and Science) and Estes Rockets, Science mentor, consultant and presenter for The

International Institute of Literacy Learning, as well as an Advisor for MESA-STC (Mathematics,

Engineering and Science Achievement-Success through Collaboration). On behalf of his team,

Gary accepted the MESA-STC Advisor Award (presented at the Governor’s Office in

California), as well as the MESA-STC Program of the Year Award (presented at the Lawrence

Livermore Lab). Gary’s administrative experience includes stints as both school principal and

district superintendent. Gary currently serves as the Executive Director/Superintendent of the

California Montessori Project, where he enjoys singing with the students, attending Science

assemblies, and joining students and families on field trips.


Song of the Oceans: The Science/Literacy Connection

Troubadour Gary will share original songs from his latest CD (“Song of the Oceans”) while

exploring the dynamic relationship between Science and Literature. Gary will provide insight

into the songwriting process while drawing on his classroom experience to share student-

centered literacy activities that support environmental science topics. Focus: K-8


Crime Scene Mystery Powder

YOU are a crime scene investigator in Los Angeles, California. You have just been sent a

mystery powder that was found at the scene of a crime. Join the team, and use scientific methods

to solve the mystery, AND the crime!  Focus: 4-6


Caution: Construction Zone

Engineering has NEVER been this much fun!  Participants will learn basic engineering strategies

while designing Straw Towers and Sail Cars. This collaborative activity is a great way to get

students excited about hands-on science. No prior experience necessary! Focus: 3-8


3 – 2 – 1 Blast-Off!

Build your own model rocket, and learn more about the exciting, and educational world of

Model Rocketry. Gary will provide step-by-step guidance, while discussing the physics of flight,

launch safety, and, of course, literary extensions. At the end of the workshop, the group will

stroll outside for a fun (and completely safe) water-bottle launch!
