Journey North – Linking Literacy and Science Inquiry
Learn how to involve your students in real world, real time, authentic science inquiry by participating in
the Journey North global study of wildlife migration and seasonal changes. Students will track the
coming of fall and spring through the migration patterns of butterflies, birds and mammals. Students
will contribute observations from their own school yards and listen and communicate with field
scientists working in the depths of the rain forest to the span of the oceans. Interdisciplinary activities
support math, language arts and social studies. All free and at your fingertips.

Friendly Talk Probes, Sticky Bars and Traffic Light Cups
What are the preconceptions that your students bring to class about specific science concepts? How do
you know what ideas your students have about seasons, adaptations, sound and other significant science
concepts? How does this information drive instruction? In this session you will have an opportunity to
observe quick, powerful and engaging formative assessment strategies that can be used with your
students.

What is the 5E’s Science Workshop Model Anyways?
Many teachers have heard about the 5E’s, but don’t have an understanding of how this instructional
model is connected to our district Elementary Science Workshop model. This session will be an
overview of this connection. Teachers will have an opportunity to look at a draft of a 5 E’s Science
Workshop and identify how Moodle is connected to this initiative.
